Events: Tech Trends Series: Web Enterprise: Making the Workplace Thrive with Collaborati

Thursday, September 20, 2007
8:00-11:00am
Emerging Enterprise Center at Foley Hoag, 1000 Winter St, North Entrance, Ste. 4000, Waltham, MA Mass Technology Leadership Council
Two major trends are interacting with each other: collaboration among
project team members working at geographically separate locations and a
growing use of the Web as an Enterprise platform. Collaboration
technologies have been around for some time. Recently, they have
entered the main stream, enabling members of far flung project teams to
work together, sometimes without ever meeting each other. The advent of
Web Enterprise architectures such as Google Enterprise will surely
shake up the traditional operating system / applications loaded on PCs
/ client - server status quo. Do you have a strategy to deal with this
new paradigm in computing?
Speakers:
- Brian Worobey, CIO, Museum of Science (Moderator)
- John Bruce, CEO, Awareness
- Timothy Ney, Co-founder, Linux Greenhouse
- Jeff Stamps, PhD, Co-Founder and Chief Scientist, NetAge Inc.
- Mark Sullivan, Director, Enterprise Systems Services and Support, HP Services
This forum will bring together practioners who have had success in both
areas and focus on the enabling technologies that foster collaboration
and the collaborative efforts that require more and more web based
tools.
Attendees at this Forum will gain insights into:
- How the "web enterprise" will impact operations, design and maintenance functions within the IT department.
- How you can take advantage of the Web Enterprise system strengths and
cost savings while maintaining security, privacy and integration with
your existing systems and platforms.
-Experiences with a variety of collaboration tools, and a description
of best practices and guidelines for how to get the most out of
collaborative technologies.
-Is it possible to have collaboration without a web enterprise system approach?

Events: Connect Africa Summit to be held in Kigali, 29-30 October
United Nations, 25 July 2007 – The Connect Africa Summit,
to be held in Kigali, Rwanda, on 29 and 30 October, will seek to promote
partnerships and the roll-out of ICT infrastructure, including broadband, as a
precondition for ICT access and services in Africa. Connect Africa aims to mobilize the
human, technical and financial resources needed to close major gaps in
Africa’s ICT infrastructure. Participants will be able to showcase ICT
and African development projects to potential partners and donors, announce
concrete initiatives to connect Africa, and focus on requirements such as
expanding broadband infrastructure, wireless and mobile access technologies,
creating the right business environment, developing an ICT-savvy workforce and
promoting innovative financing. To

Events: Third International Conference on Communities and Technologies.
Third International Conference on Communities and Technologies.
June 28-30, 2007, Michigan State University
n an increasingly networked world, the concept of community has taken
on new meanings and inspired the development of a wide range of
technologies aimed at forging connections, improving communication, and
enabling coordination among groups of people. Today, such terms as
virtual community, blogging, podcasting, and smart mobs have become
commonplace, yet each represents a complex system of hardware,
software, and people, shaped by perceptions, norms, rules, and habits,
and occurring within varied social and cultural settings.
The Communities and Technologies biennial international conference
serves as a forum for stimulating and disseminating research on the
complex connections between communities - both physical and virtual -
and information and communication technologies. Researchers studying
aspects of this interaction between communities and technologies,
regardless of disciplinary background, are invited to submit original
contributions to the Third International Conference on Communities and
Technologies.
More details regarding the submission of papers can be found in the
call for papers on this site. Information on conference registration
and accommodation will be provided on this site as well.

Events: ICTD2006 Conference - May 25/26 - Berkeley
http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/ictd2006/index.html
ICTD2006 is a multidisciplinary forum for academic researchers designing information and communication technologies for developing economies. The conference presents state-of-the-art research by technical and social scientists, with original, peer-reviewed papers and a poster session, as well as keynote addresses by leading scholars in the field.
Scholars presenting at this conference are part of a fast growing new field of research on the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) to addressing the challenges of developing economies. There has been an explosion of public, private, and non-profit ICTD projects in the past decade; however, systematic and scientifically sound research is just beginning to emerge to address a range of questions, such as:
Are novel technologies needed to meet development needs — or can we adapt off-the-shelf technologies to the needs of populations in developing economy contexts, where user skills are diverse, users speak local languages, literacy is low, there is limited access to power and bandwidth, institutions are very different, and so forth?
What groups and institutions are involved in the design and development of these projects? Do different strategies for inclusion result in differing outcomes?
What are the appropriate methodologies and metrics for evaluating the impact of projects? What determines the success and sustainability (or failure) of projects?
Can we transfer lessons from one part of the world to the others, for example in provision of network infrastructure, health care, education, and so forth?
The conference organizers were committed to maintaining a scientifically rigorous and multi-disciplinary review process. We solicited papers reporting high-quality original research. Over 140 full papers were submitted, 16 papers were accepted through a double-blind review process for presentation at the conference, and 22 were accepted for presentation as posters. These papers and posters were written by researchers from fields including anthropology, sociology, economics, political science, computer science, electrical engineering, industrial, design, and schools of information.
The first conference will be held on May 25th and 26th 2006 at the School of Information at the Univrsity of California, Berkeley. We expect this to be the first of a series of conferences to occur every one or two years, and moving from country to country.
